Cupcakes and Other Treats

In 2013, I recognized a need in my neighborhood for more frequent family events. Our neighborhood is about half retired couples, and half families, but it was clear that only the retired couples were being catered to. Mostly because it is retired folks who have the time to dedicate to such activities. Nothing wrong with that, but with two young kids of my own (who were not in school yet), the opportunity for me to get out and meet other families was somewhat limited. So I decided to do something about it.

A neighbor works in the movie theater industry, and our neighborhood has a wonderful community center that can be purposed for all sorts of things. I decided that between my neighbor’s access to movie theater popcorn and my baking skills, we could make a really fun and memorable event for all the kids in the neighborhood. Beginning in January of 2014, I began hosting a monthly Family Movie Night for the Roxborough Park community. I would promote each event ahead of time through the community newsletter, flyers in the community mail pods (where everyone would see the flyer prominently displayed as they picked up his/her mail), and across social media channels targeting our community.

For four years (with about 10 movies shown per year), I have been promoting our monthly event, coordinating all of the necessary supplies, and creating treats that tie in perfectly to the featured movie. When we watched The Muppet Movie, I made Kermit the Frog cupcakes that were made with layers of rainbow cake. When we watched Cinderella, I made pumpkin spice-flavored glass slipper lollipops. And when we watched Sing, I made ice cream cone cupcake microphones (using popular ice cream flavors like mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream as the base for the ice cream cones before rolling the matching butter cream frosting in silver sugar to create that microphone effect). Sometimes I find inspiration on Pinterest or YouTube, but more often than not, I am not excited by what I find, and so I find inspiration from the movie itself, and figure out how to make it work (and make 6 dozen of the item at that!). Wonder Woman meant Golden Lasso of Truth Churros! The Captain Underpants Movie meant Toilet Cupcakes. (And can you believe that no one else had made toilet cupcakes and shared them to Pinterest?!)

Not to brag, but I think it is fair to say this is a genuine case of #nailedit. Enjoy!
